Piazza del Popolo (folkets plass) is eclipsed by the imposing Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, which has become more beautiful with the passing time thanks to the particular warm tone lent by weathering to the soft volcanic stone of which it is entierly built (tufa).
Construction began in the 13th century, in Orvietan Romanesque-Gothic style, on a site that had been occupied since about 1157 by a papal palace commissioned during the pontificate of Adrian IV.
The palace was later granted by the Church to the Commune as the seat of the Capitano del Popolo (captain of the people, roughly the equivalent of mayor).
Dette er en av mange flott bygg, du kan se i byen: Orvieto, som ligger ca. 20 minutters kjøring fra Villa Helena, god tur !
